Experience Corps is a national service program that recruits and trains adults 55 and older to tutor and mentor public school students in grades K-3 who need extra support in literacy. Since 2005, a team of Experience Corps members has been part of the Hillcrest community. In addition to providing one-on-one and small-group literacy tutoring, Hillcrest’s Experience Corps members also tutor students in math, grades 4 and 5, and the after-school program. The Hillcrest Experience Corps program is a win-win situation—older adults feel engaged and that they’re making a difference in their community, and Hillcrest students benefit academically and emotionally from the individualized attention.
