Reading Partners

About Reading Partners

Reading Partners has been providing one-on-one tutoring to students reading behind grade level since we joined the Hillcrest community in 2011. We recruit and train volunteers from the community to deliver high-quality instruction using our specialized curriculum. Our reading partners volunteers each have their own unique skill set and come from all walks of life; they are retirees, former teachers, college and high school students. They all share one common goal: to help Hillcrest students unlock and develop the foundational skills they need to succeed in school and in life.

Quotes from Staff

“My students are enthusiastic and motivated to read when reading with a tutor. They have developed a discourse for discussing their reading with improved comprehension and vocabulary.”

“Students are receiving extra 1:1 attention. This has allowed them to gain a deeper understanding of literacy.”

“One of the most important benefits for most of my students has been the 1:1 time dedicated only to them… making connections with other adults in the community.”

“My students are immigrants, so their parents are unable to give feedback about reading in English. It's vital the students get regular and frequent time to read aloud, interact one-on-one, and get immediate feedback.”
