Fifth Grade

5th grade is a year about finishing one academic journey and preparing for another.  Before leaving Hillcrest students demonstrate what they have learned in both state exams and their portfolio presentations, which they make before classmates, parents and members of the Hillcrest community.

Mrs. Levin, our school's literacy coach, has helped us tremendously getting our Reader's Workshop approach up and running. The students read twice for 20 minutes with a specific teaching focus during our reader's workshop time. We are in the midst of assessing our students' reading level in order to see if they have made progress since the beginning of the year. Please inquire actively about your child's reading level and specific book recommendations.

In math we are working on mastering the concept of fractions. Please review the multiplication tables and division tables with your child since this is the base for fraction work. Finally, we started a new writing focus until winter break--Response to Literature. The students read short stories and analyze their themes and make personal connections to the stories.
