Reading Instruction
Hillcrest is implementing Reader’s Workshop as part of their Balanced Literacy model. Reading Workshop incorporates the reading of various Literature and non-fiction text with the grade level literacy standards. Students select books at their independent reading level from an extensive classroom library. The teachers use literature to teach students new reading skills and strategies. Students apply new comprehension strategies and reading skills during independent reading time. The teacher meets with groups of students to provide follow-up instruction. Each student is assessed 3 times during the year to determine their specific reading level. The goal of the teachers and students is to progress as readers and develop a love and appreciation for reading.
Writing Instruction
Students at Hillcrest participate in the writing process in order to publish 4 pieces during the year from a variety of writing genres. Students present their published writing to peers and parents. The students keep writing portfolios and self select the writing they will present.
Reading Intervention and Instructional Support
Hillcrest currently has three Literacy Specialists and a Literacy Coach. The Literacy Specialists strategically teach students who
require an intervention model of literacy instruction. The Literacy Specialist meet with small groups of students in grades 1st-5th in order to accelerate their literacy learning.
The Literacy Coach at Hillcrest provides Professional development in Literacy Instruction, demonstration lessons, co-planning with teachers, and structures for teacher observations of peers.
